WHILE IT IS DAY

I know we know this, but…

There are some things we never graduate from. I was just working in the FSM bookstore while a first semester class was in session on the other side of the wall. Matt Candler was talking about the bridal paradigm and something he said struck me to my unrenewed core (too dramatic?). He was speaking to the new students about how Jesus loves us in our weakness and, knowing they are still like “wet cement”, he went into this bit about how they need to get this foundation right at the beginning of their schooling so that when they progress into the more rigorous and academic end of the school they keep the bridal paradigm as the primary lens through which they view God and, subsequently, live their lives in secret and before others.

It’s so easy, especially for someone analytical like me, to kinda just check off what you’ve done and look for the next thing that will stimulate your intellect. This is an enemy of the fasted lifestyle. I’m learning that part of what living in weakness before the Lord means is subjecting your mind to the boundaries He sees as optimum for growing in love. That’s part of what “love the Lord your God with all your mind” means, not just mental ascent in systematic theology.

I don’t know if anyone can relate, but that’s where His finger is pointing at in me right now.

  1. I can totally relate to what you’re saying here. I am constantly checking off what I’ve done and searching for the next thing to learn and the next piece of information that will stimulate my intellect. I am very analytical and learn quickly, in fact I pretty much do everything at an extreme pace (I’m often told by my husband) and never stop to smell the flowers or even enjoy what I’ve just accomplished. There are often times in my life where God just has to put the brakes on me to get me to focus on my relationship with him.
